Academic Standards and Requirements

Music Therapy Juries

Music Therapy students must demonstrate proficiency on piano, guitar and voice prior to fieldwork and internship courses (MUS 376, 377, 460, 461). Students must pass music therapy juries in order to progress in the sequence of courses.

Music Education Department Professional Program Expectations

To learn and acquire the professional and personal dispositions expected in the professional world, Music Education majors participate in twice monthly education seminars to prepare them for eventual admittance to the Division of Education in the second semester of their junior year.

  • Music Education and Music Therapy students will engage in regular reflection and self-assessment concerning the fulfillment of these dispositions and meet with a music faculty member at the end of each semester to review and guide their development. Students must be assessed "at" or "above expectations" in professional dispositions before their student teaching experience begins.
  • Each student reports to the Music Education Dispositions Committee during the first semester of their junior year to demonstrate readiness for admittance to the Division of Education.
  • Students work toward a series of musical benchmarks that demonstrate proficiency and readiness to teach. These develop the skills used by teachers in the profession. Students must pass all required demonstrations of proficiency before they begin their student teaching. These can be taken multiple times, but are cumulative and sequential in content.
  • As part of meeting their proficiency requirements, Music Education students participate in Music Education Lab Ensemble for five or more semesters.
  • Students participate in public performances as part of their Applied Lesson requirement prior to student teaching. These performances are in addition to any ensemble performances and juries they are required to present.

Music Education Juries

Music Education students must pass all required demonstrations of proficiency before they may begin student teaching. Students are assessed at the end of each semester. Requirements include a satisfactory demonstration of:

  • Sightsinging
  • Dictation
  • Eartraining
  • Conducting
  • Musical pedagogy
  • Keyboard skills

These can be taken multiple times, but are cumulative and sequential in content. Students must pass keyboard proficiency juries in order to progress in the sequence of courses. Specific proficiency exam content will be made available to students at the start of each semester.
