Home Inspection Continuing Education

Home inspectors in New York state are required to complete 24 hours of approved continuing education within their two-year license renewal period prior to the expiration date in order to renew their license. Tuition Discount

A new discounted tuition price of $495 for people who pre-register for 24 hours of HI CE courses with Molloy College has been established this fall. That can result in a savings of up to $165 depending upon the individual courses that you might register for. To get the discount you will need to register for the, "Home Inspection 24 Hour CE Program Discount Course".  Once registered for this "course" you will be able to register for the individual courses that you would like to take towards the 24 hour requirement. You do not have to select all the courses that you wish to register for at your time of registration in the discount course and there is no time limit to complete the 24 hours of coursework.  The courses listed below are approved by New York state, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services for Home Inspector continuing education credit. Additional courses will be offered in the near future.

Scheduling and Locations

Courses are offered throughout the year, during the day and evening at both our Rockville Centre campus and at our Suffolk Center campus in East Farmingdale. Course are rotated at both locations throughout the year and the courses are usually offered at least 2-3 times per year. Click here for the current schedule of classes.

Home Inspection 24 Hour CE Program Discount Course This "course" is designed for those people who would like to enroll for all 24 hours of required coursework for NY State Continuing Education credit for Home Inspectors. Inspecting Storm Damaged Houses(4 continuing education hours)  This 4 hour course will discuss inspecting storm damaged houses, both before and after repairs have been made to the house.  With so many houses recently damaged from Hurricane Irene and Super Storm Sandy, this course will serve to broaden the knowledge base of home inspectors who practice in this area.  The course will include an introduction to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and its terminology; case studies of storm damaged houses; concerns such as structural, electrical and mold issues; strategies to minimize future storm impacts; and items to focus on in repaired houses, including generator installations.

New York State Home Inspection Code of Ethics And Standards of Practice (6 continuing education hours) This course will cover the recently adopted Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Home Inspection in New York State. The Code of Ethics (Subpart 197-4) and Standards of Practice (Subpart 197-5) will be covered in detail. Strategies will be discussed in regard to complying with both the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice as well on how to implement the Standards of Practice into home inspection procedures. Specific examples will be discussed to highlight the new version of the Standards of Practice.

Introduction To Leed: Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design(4 continuing education hours) This 4-hour-course will serve as an introduction to LEED 2009 for home inspectors. LEED is a green building program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is comprised of several rating systems including LEED for Homes. The basic concepts behind LEED and its effects on building design, construction and operation will be discussed.

Effective Report Writing Techniques (6 continuing education hours)This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit for Home Inspectors. In this course you will: learn how to protect themselves and clients in their reports; write effective, accurate, and concise reports; recognize and avoid possible ethical and legal problems; understand and choose appropriate report formats and understand what to include/exclude in reports.
Instructor: Alain Attias, licensed home inspector, board certified master home inspector, pro-lab mold inspector certified, DEC structural and termite inspection licensed and EPA HVAC and refrigeration license.

Mold Is In The Air For Home Inspectors (6 continuing education hours) This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit for home inspectors. In this course you will: understand the responsibilities and limitations of the home inspector with regard to the identification of suspected mold; identify all means by which water, moisture and humidity can extrinsically and intrinsically penetrate the different components of a home; differentiate between different types of molds and how mold can impact the safety of the home inspector and occupants; visually differentiate between adequate and inadequate grading on a subject property; properly use report writing methods to protect the home inspector and his/her client, when suspected mold is visible; identify adequate ventilation in basements, crawl spaces, and attics.

Introduction to Residential Green Building (3 continuing education hours) This 3 hour course will serve as an introduction to Residential Green Building for Home Inspectors. Green building is a constantly developing field which is being promoted by organizations such as the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB Green). The basic concepts of Green Building will be discussed as it applies to systems and components observed and reported on by Home Inspectors.

Environmental Issues in Home Inspections: Asbestos, Lead, Mold & Radon (2 continuing education hours) This 2 hour course will discuss environmental issues commonly encountered and dealt with during home inspections. These issues include asbestos, lead, mold and radon. Identification and inspection procedures will be discussed, as well as proper report writing techniques.

Introduction to Auxiliary ASHI Standards: Residential PreDrywall Inspections & Pool/Spa Inspections (2 continuing education hours) This 2 hour course will introduce the home inspector to the
recently developed auxiliary ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) Standards of Professional Practice for Residential Pre-Drywall Inspections and Residential Pool and Spa Inspections. An overview of both the PreDrywall and Pool/Spa Auxiliary Standards will serve to broaden the knowledge base of both experienced and new home inspectors.

ELECTRICAL INSPECTION BASICS (6 CE hours) This course will reinforce the electrical inspection and the proper reporting of issues observed.  The more common defects will be discussed along with photos of actual observed conditions.  All property and house electrical elements will be examined including garage, attic, and basement/crawls areas, service entrance, and distribution panel/sub-panel(s).
Instructor: DENNIS J. DEVOTI, P.E. is a New York State Professional Engineer and a NY State Licensed Home Inspector with over 15 years experience as a home inspector. He has over 15 years of teaching experience, three of which were teaching an Overview of Home Inspection course at Molloy College. He is also certified by the National Institute of Building Inspectors. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College.

BASEMENT WATER PENETRATION (3 CE hours) Topics included in this session are: water sources and likely penetration weak spots, inspection techniques, reporting phrases, and discussion of remedial repair ideas and potential long term solutions.  Discussion will be supplemented with actual inspection photos.

INSPECTING ROOFS AND ATTICS (3 CE hours) At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:
1- Identify the different styles of roofs that may be found on New York State residences.
2- Typical roof styles and materials used along with determining the most appropriate method to inspect the roof with an emphasis on observing best safety practices.
3- Identifying and reporting problems associated with roofs and roofing materials.
4- Inspect flashings, skylights, and chimneys, vent stacks and other penetrations and competently comment on their adequacy.
5 -Identify and collect appropriate information from the interior roof (Attic space) to help identify structural, insulation, different types of ventilation, and other issues that have an impact during a roof/attic inspection.
6- Prepare accurate and complete written reports on this aspect of their findings.
