The Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Studies Department offers a Biology B.S. degree that includes a  41 credit major requirement and a 33 credit related requirement. The Department incorporates three separate study tracks within the Biology B.S. degree program. These tracks are:

  • Pre-Professional Medical Programs Track: intended for students seeking admission to medical, dental, veterinary school or a Graduate Biology program
  • Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track: intended for students seeking admission into physician assistant, physical therapy or occupational therapy graduate programs
  • General Biological Sciences Track

Each track has a common set of major and related requirements that continue to foster an initial exploration in the main areas  of natural and physical science. Within each study track BIO elective credits allows for student and faculty input into the direction of the program. Each track requires the student to complete at least one semester of Field Experience along with the opportunity - required or optional depending on the track - to participate in original research with the faculty of the Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Studies department.

Students who are unsure of their future pathway can elect to follow the General Biological Sciences track, which requires a full year of Field Experience, a substantial preparation for future job placement. The Chemistry minor is still directly available to students in the Pre-Professional Medical Programs Track and the General Biological Sciences Track. Students in the Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track can use elective credits available to complete the Chemistry minor

In 2015 the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which is used for entrance into medical programs, is undergoing substantial changes. Besides making Biochemistry a substantial part of the examination, there is the addition of a social and behavioral sciences section: Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior.  To be prepared for these additions, students in the Pre-Professional Medical Programs/ Graduate Studies Track will need to take Biochemistry, General Psychology and Introduction to Sociology, all of which will be related requirements in that track (satisfying general education requirements). Admission to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistant graduate programs requires a strong foundation in Anatomy and Physiology along with an increase background in Psychology. These areas are addressed as part of the Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track.

Program Description and Requirements:

The Pre-Professional Medical Programs/Graduate Studies Track is a track within the Biology Major and is only open to Biology majors. The Pre-Professional Medical Programs/Graduate Studies Track, consists of 35-36 credits. Students apply for the Pre-Professional Medical Programs/Graduate Studies Track upon admission to the college or the major.

The Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track is a track within the Biology Major and is only open to Biology majors. The Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track, consists of 29 credits. Students apply for the Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track upon admission to the college or the major.

The General Biological Sciences Track is a track within the Biology Major and is only open to Biology majors. The General Biological Sciences Track, consists of 33 credits. Students apply for the General Biological Sciences Track upon admission to the college or the major.
