Arrival at Bangkok Airport:
To get downtown, take a cab. It shouldn't cost more than B300 including the expressway toll. Frequent connecting flights are available to most major tourist destinations using Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways.
Returning to the Airport:
Leave at least one hour to get to the airport on weekdays (Depending on the traffic, the trip can take anywhere between 30-70 minutes). Be sure to have B500 to pay your departure tax.
Flying within Southeast Asia:
Bangkok Airways has frequent flights to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in southeast Asia, most notably Angkor in Cambodia. For more information see the airline's web site at www.bangkokair.com or www.mekongworldheritage.com.
Thailand has three main seasons: Hot (March-May), rainy (June-September) and cool (October-February). The best time to visit is during the cool season, when temperatures average from 70-90 degrees. This is peak season, however, so expect prices to be a bit higher at this time and greater competition for inexpensive hotel rooms. During the period around New Years (Dec 31-Jan 2) it is particularly difficult to find adequate accommodations, and, therefore, you should book very early.
Thai food is known for being rather spicy, but you can always ask to have your meals prepared a bit more mildly. Among the most popular Thai meals with Molloy students and faculty were the following: Pork Satay (pork on skewers with peanut sauce), Tom Yam Goong (Spicy Lemon Grass Soup), Cashew Chicken, Chicken/Shrimp with Red or Green Curry, Sticky Rice, and, of course, Pad Thai.
Tipping is not necessary for cabs, restaurants, etc. But if your service has been good, a small gratuity is appropriate (B20-40).
