National Grid Foundation - Teaching Green Institute Grant Program (TGI)
The following information is for the 2013 Teaching Green Institute Grant Program. We anticipate hearing on the status of our 2014 program sometime in March 2014. Grant and Institute Background
Molloy College has received a grant for the summer of 2013 of $35,000 from the National Grid Foundation to continue an innovative institute that was founded in 2011: The Molloy College: National Grid Foundation Teaching Green Institute (TGI). TGI isdesigned to train middle school and high school teachers in environmental issues and to provide suggestions on incorporating environmentally focused curricula into their classrooms.
Molloy College, already well-known for its expertise in teacher training, will tap its Sustainability Institute staff to act as guest lecturers to supplement education and science professors for TGI. The instructors will focus on such topics as global warming and its local challenges, clean energy solutions on Long Island and reducing toxins in your daily environment.
Two institutes will be offered: one for middle school teachers and one for high school teachers. The Institutes will be offered Monday -Thursday, July 8-11, 2013 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day at our Suffolk Center campus in East Farmingdale. The Institutes may be taken as a 3 credit graduate course or on a non-credit basis.
45 scholarshipsranging from full scholarships to partial scholarships will be awarded. Special consideration will be given to teachers from underserved communities, from schools/districts in need of improvement or from low-moderate income communities. However, as of June 3, 2013 there are only five (5) full schorlorships that are still available and those are only available to teachers who come from schools with a 25% or higher free/reduced lunch percentage, schools/districts in need of improvement, districts/schools with a high minority population and/or schools/districts in low-moderate income communities.
The program is open to public and private school teachers on Long Island, Brooklyn, Staten Island and parts of Queens as well as some upstate communities served by National Grid.
Teachers will need to complete a short one-page preliminary application. Upon receipt of the preliminary application teachers will be notified within one-week of their acceptance into the program and their scholarship amount.

Tuition and Fees, Application and Registration Procedures
The tuition and fees for a 3-credit course is normally $2,750. Molloy College will discount the tuition by $1,850 and the National Grid Foundation - Teaching Green Institute will provide grants ranging from $900 to $300 per teacher. The final cost to the teacher will be either be no cost, $300 or $600, depending upon the grant amount awarded, to take one of the 2013 TGI Summer Institutes for graduate credit.
The tuition and fees for 2 in-service credits is usually $495. The National Grid Foundation - Teaching Green Institute will provide grants ranging from $495 to $300 per teacher. The final cost to the teacher will be either be no cost or $195, depending upon the grant amount awarded, to take one of the 2013 TGI Summer Institutes for in-service credit.
