Healthcare Information Technology
Introduction to the Management of Healthcare Information Technology
The healthcare industry is growing at a rapid pace and undergoing some of its most significant changes as the use of healthcare information technology (HIT) increases. HIT focuses on the core business of health care: providing information and decision support for clinicians at the point of care. Such clinical transformation requires new knowledge and skills for all healthcare professionals, especially those in supervisory or management positions. This course will give you the proper foundation to facilitate the development, implementation and maintenance of information technology for decision-making and strategic planning. Topics include: the role of information within healthcare; overview of modern hardware and software platforms; planning, developing and managing IT systems; introduction to databases and data warehouses; individual roles in systems development life cycles; technology impacts on healthcare. This course also addresses protecting people and their information. Substantial use of real-world projects, case studies and hands-on assignments are employed. Upon completion of the course students are expected to have gained an appreciation of the important contribution information technology makes to the success of healthcare organizations. Instructor: George Pefanis, senior software engineer.
You have a choice of taking the course either in the evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for 6 sessions or during the day from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for 6 sessions. The course is generally offered twice a year. Once from April - May and again from October - November.
