This institute will explore major topics in the A.P. calculus AB curriculum including:
• Differential equations
• Riemann sums
• Fundamental theorem
• Recent A.P. exam questions and solutions
• Grading procedures
New changes to the exam format will also be discussed!
You will develop lesson plans and create your own A.P.-like questions. This institute is appropriate for new teachers and for experienced teachers seeking new strategies and methods. There will be a discussion of various texts and supplementary materials, as well as useful web sites. It is essential that participants have a graphing calculator, TI-83/84 or TI-89. All of these sources will be used to demonstrate methods of clarifying and enhancing topics on the A.P. calculus syllabus.
Instructor: Dr. Maxine Lifshitz is Chairperson of the Math Department at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, New York. Dr. Lifshitz is the author of AP Calculus AB/BC, published by Amsco and is a contributor to the Solutions Guide to A.P. Exams published by the Mathematical Olympiads. Dr. Lifshitz was inducted into the Long Island Math Teachers' Hall of Fame by the Nassau County Math Teachers' Association in 2009.
Dr. Lifshitz has taught A.P. Calculus for more than 30 years and has conducted summer institutes in the teaching of A.P. calculus AB and BC for over 10 years. As math consultant for the College Board, Dr. Lifshitz has given workshops both locally and nationally at NCTM, T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology), CHAT and Limacon in the use of the graphing calculator to clarify and enhance mathematics instruction. Dr. Lifshitz has been a Reader of AP Calculus exams for twelve years.

Application & Registration Instructions
The AP* Summer Institutes may either be taken for 3 graduate credits for $900 (no additional fees) or on a non-credit basis for in-service credits for $795 (no additional fees). You tuition includes: complimentary continental breakfast and lunch each day, approved College Board materials, complimentary textbooks (depending upon the institute) and a binder of handouts from the instructor.
You must attend each day to receive in-service credit. If you are taking the course for graduate credit, in addition to attending the institute each day, there is a project that is due within 2 weeks of the conclusion of the institute.
The registration deadline is three weeks prior to the start date of each institute. Late registration may be possible if space and materials are still available.
