Advanced Placement Summer Institutes

Molloy College, through the Divisions of Education and Continuing Education and Professional Development, offers summer institutes for teachers of Advanced Placement (A.P.) high school courses. Institutes are taught by experienced teachers of A.P. and are endorsed by the College Board.

The institutes are designed to prepare teachers for the College Board's Advanced Placement Curriculum. Participants will gain experience with the concepts and goals of the A.P. courses and their corresponding examinations. The Institutes will address curriculum, pedagogy and technology as supported by national standards and the College Board.

Each workshop will be led by College Board-certified A.P. consultants and will provide participants with the experiences necessary to successfully teach an advanced placement course in their discipline.

All the Institutes are usually offered on a one-week, Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. basis at either
our Rockville Centre Campus located in Nassau County, Long Island or at our Suffolk Center at Route 110, on the grounds of Republic Airport located at: 7180 Grumman Lane, in East Farmingdale, New York.

Graduate Credit/Non-Credit Options
The A.P. summer institutes that are offered may be taken for graduate credit for professional development at the reduced rate of $900 per 3-credit institute or on a non-credit basis for in-service credit for $750 per institute. Please note that teachers who are teaching full-time at a private school may receive an additional 30% tuition discount. Private school teachers will need to provide a letter from their principal stating that the teacher is a full-time teacher at the school.

Each institute is limited to 25 participants, with the exception of our instititutes where a lab is involved. In those instances the enrollment is limited to 12-16 participants.

Qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come/first-served basis. The registration deadline is three weeks prior to the start date of each institute. Late registration may be possible if space and materials are still available.

You tuition includes: complimentary continental breakfast and lunch each day, approved College Board materials, complimentary textbooks (depending upon the institute) and a binder of handouts from the instructor.

In-Service Credit
You must attend each day to receive in-service credit.

Graduate Credit
If you are taking the course for graduate credit, in addition to attending the institute each day, there is a project that is due within 2 weeks of the conclusion of the institute.

The Summer Institutes are all offered for 3 graduate credits and are approved as such by the New York State Department of Education. The institutes meet for 45 contact hours, of which 30 hours consist of classroom instruction and 15 hours consist of outside work, including a course project which is due within two weeks of the institute end date. This is the same breakdown of hours for all of our graduate courses that are offered during the fall and spring semesters on a 14-week schedule, the only difference is that the summer institutes are offered on a more intense schedule.

The institutes are all listed with the course code, EDU 524, which is part of our graduate course offerings in the Division of Education and can be used as an elective towards our Master of Science degree in Education.
