Call of the Lark: A Memoir By Maura Mulligan
Maura Mulligan will take us on a trip back in time to what life was like in rural Ireland of the 1940s and 50s. With readings from her powerful new memoir, Call of the Lark, she will share her childhood on a rain-swept farm in County Mayo, where women smoked clay pipes at a wake, the donkey brought turf from the bog to keep the fire burning, and children dibbled the spuds, picked blackberries, and dodged cane-wielding schoolmasters.
Saturday, October 20, 2:30 pm, Reception Room
Smarty Girl - Dublin Savage By Honor Molloy
A magical afternoon of humorous stories that conjure a vanished Dublin. Author Honor Molloy's autobiographical novel is a tender, irresistible and raucous portrait of 1960s Dublin, as seen through the eyes of a precocious little girl with a fierce imagination. Molloy's book was published in March.(GemmaMedia / Simon & Schuster Audio).
Sunday, December 2, 3:00 pm, Reception Room
Wogan Family Lecture: Life in Rural Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s ByTom Phelan
Novelist Tom Phelan was born and reared on a farm in County Laois and his youthful memories are steeped in the Irish countryside. In this talk, he will discuss life in rural Ireland in a time before the Celtic Tiger, before the rural electrification, before the automobile; a time when transportation consisted of donkey and cart, when women washed clothes by hand and spread them on the hedges to dry; a time when the only vacation most people had was a stay in the hospital and the most exciting day of the year for children was not Christmas, but the Threshing Day. Phelan's talk will be illustrated with selections from his novels, particularly Derrycloney, which Phelan calls his "fanfare for the common man and woman" of his childhood.
