Local Softball Rivals to square off in NCAA East Super regional
After winning three straight last weekend to advance, the No. 3 seed Molloy College softball team will now take on neighboring foe and fifth-seeded Adelphi University in the NCAA Division II East Super Regional at Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City, N.Y. The best-of-three series will begin Friday, May. 17, with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
Molloy (50-12) and Adelphi (41-17), separated by only four miles of traveling distance, go head-to-head for the second time in 2013. The Lions and Panthers split their regular-season twinbill on Mar. 5. The maroon and white, behind a four-hit complete-game shutout from senior pitcher Megan Butterworth, won the opener of that set, 3-0.
The stakes are a little different this time. The winner of the super regional will earn a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship, which will take place from May 23-27 at Moyer Field in Salem, Va.
Since their first-ever meeting on Mar. 27, 1995, Adelphi has had the upper hand, sporting a to-date mark of 26-10-1. However, Molloy has won four of the last five contests - three of which occurred in postseason play (ECC Tournament (at NYIT) in 2009, NCAA Division II East Sub-Regional (at LIU Post) in 2012).
