Molloy Freshman Qualifies for Nationals in Long Jump
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Indoor Track and Field Committee selected the entrants for its Division II National Championships in Mankato, Minn., and freshman Stephanie Meyer (Seaford, N.Y.) of Molloy College was chosen as one of 14 qualifiers in the long jump. She will now compete for a national title in the event on Mar. 9 at Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University - Mankato.
Meyer posted the qualifying distance on Jan. 22 at the Long Island Championships, with a leap of 5.77 meters, which was a new school record as well. "I am shocked. It still hasn't processed yet that I made it," she stated. "The highest I have ever reached in my career was States, but that does not compare to Nationals." When asked about her long-jumping skills, she proclaimed: "I wanted to get better at it, but I never thought I'd be this good."
"She has truly exceeded expectations," stated Head Coach Allan Kilfoyle (Oceanside, N.Y.). "To excel at the long jump was not my focus, but rather in the (55-meter) hurdles. When she had her qualifying jump, it was a surprise, a pleasant surprise."
Meyer marks the first national qualifier between the men's and women's programs in their short four-year history. To obtain results on Meyer in her quest for an individual national crown next Friday, please visit the NCAA website at www.ncaa.com.
