Butterworth’s Two-Hitter Sends Molloy Softball to Super Regionals
On May 12, a two-hit complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts by senior pitcher Megan Butterworth led the third-seeded Molloy College softball team to a 6-0 rout of second-seeded Caldwell College in an NCAA Division II East II Sub-Regional final Saturday at Bob Klein Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the victory, the Lions advance to the East Super Regional for the third time in the last four years.
For the second-straight game, Molloy (50-12), which reached the 50-win plateau for the first time in program history, took the lead first. Freshman catcher Milan Botte drove a two-run no-doubter to right to give the Lions a 2-0 edge. Three innings later, Molloy made Caldwell pay for some key errors. After Botte and sophomore first baseman Victoria Gunnels reached on miscues by the Cougars' (45-12) left side of the infield, Butterworth came through with a two-out RBI single between first and second to make it a three-run game.
The Lions would eventually hold a 4-0 cushion through four, as freshman third baseman Tracey Balinskas went to the opposite field to plate junior designated player Dayna White. The maroon and white capped off the scoring for the afternoon in their final turn at-bat, when senior outfielder Jeana Frey came around 240 feet for a two-run inside-the-park homer.
In the circle, Butterworth was dazzling, limiting the Cougars to only two hits and two walks over a complete-game effort. The win was her 26th of 2013.
Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and her Molloy squad now await their opponent in a best-of-three NCAA Division II East Super Regional, which is set to begin on Friday (May. 17). The site of the series will be announced Monday morning.
