Jump for Heart

Story and photography by Anthony Vela

On November 14, Molloy students were joined by former NFL player Marcus Dixon collaborated with the American Heart Association and put on a fundraising event at the Public Square to raise awareness about heart defects and the importance of regular testing for them. Over $400 worth in raffles were handed out, and all donations went directly to the American Heart Association. The event was actually a class project from a Philosophy of Leadership class with Professor Mike Russo. Dixon was on hand to lend his support. Dixon jump roped, signed autographs, posed for pictures, and spoke with the many attendees.

It was Philosophy student Josh Elkin, a friend of Dixon's, who was able to get the former professional athlete's support for the event. "I have been close friends with Marcus for a few years," said Elkin. "My goal, post-college, is to become a licensed NFL agent and I met Marcus' previous agent, Howard Shatsky, through Twitter. We grew our relationship to a point where he introduced me to Marcus. From there, Marcus and I interacted through Twitter and Facebook and found out that we had a lot in common. He respects my passion for sports business and offered to help me out anytime. I have always looked out for him as well.  We consider ourselves extended family and he came to Molloy to do me a favor. I love that guy to death and would do anything for him," said Elkin.
