Department of Athletics Earns Community Engagement Award

The East Coast Conference has awarded the Molloy College Department of Athletics with the Community Engagement Award of Excellence for its work with the Special Olympics of Long Island over the past academic year. The award, given at the ECC Awards Banquet held at the de Seversky Mansion on the campus of New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, N.Y., is given to the institution that embodies the principles of community engagement by building relationships and bridging the gap between campus and community.

Molloy hosted three events for the Special Olympics organization ranging from early-February through late-March. Things were kicked off at a basketball doubleheader in Quealy Gymnasium, as four co-ed basketball teams traveled to Rockville Centre to compete at halftime of a men's and women's basketball contest. The athletes also got to enjoy both games from the stands and partake in the excitement of Molloy basketball as both squads hosted C.W. Post on Senior Day.

Department of Athletics Earns Community Engagement AwardA few weeks later, nearly 100 coaches and instructors from Special Olympics Long Island participated in a Coaches Conference on campus, where they received certifications and education about coaching. Molloy head basketball coaches Charles Marquardt and Tim O'Hagan, along with volleyball head coach Billy Corrao, all dedicated their time to sharing coaching techniques and drills with those in attendance.

To finish it all off, the Department of Athletics hosted a Special Olympics Saint Patrick's Day Dance in Hays Theatre on Saturday, March 24. Nearly 100 Special Olympics athletes joined 25 Molloy student-athletes on the dance floor, partying the night away from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. This final event was a great way for all involved to let loose and unwind from the stresses of the playing field, while developing personal relationships with other members of the nearby community.
